1,111 cyclists wanted on 1-1-2011

SOME 1,111 cyclists are expected to take part in the upcoming Cycling Parade in conjunction with the George Town City Day 2011 celebrations on Jan 1, 2011.

Set to take place at the Esplanade at 8.30pm, the event is one of the many lined up to celebrate George Town’s city status accorded by Queen Elizabeth on New Year’s Day in 1957.

Speaking at a recent press conference to announce the event, State Youth, Sports, Women, Family and Community Development Committee chairman Lydia Ong Kok Fooi said participants would receive T-shirts and certificates.

“Entry is free and forms are available at leading bicycle shops in the state. Completed forms need to be submitted to 26, Green Hall Back Portion, Jalan Tun Syed Sheh Barakbah for number allocation,” she said.

She advised interested parties to sign up as soon as possible, as registration closes once the total number of participants reaches 1,111.

The figure 1,111 was chosen to symbolise the event day’s date, 1.11.11.

Jointly organised by Ong’s office, the Penang Municipal Council, Penang Cycling Station and Penang Sports Council, the event will see participants take a three kilometre route around the heritage enclave. Riders are also required to wear helmets.

“Cycling is a good way to lead a healthy, green and active lifestyle whilst ensuring sustainability.

“If we’re not serious about tackling the issue of global warming, in 20 years time, millions will be in peril,” she said.

She also said the state was in the final stages of a proposal to implement a n2o-car ruling on Sundays until 2pm around the George Town heritage zone.

“Reducing the usage of cars on Sundays will be a good start to reduce our carbon footprint.

“It will also allow locals and tourists alike to go for a stroll and enjoy cleaner air, and also enjoy the beauty and architecture of our historic buildings,” Ong added.
